The Federal Government will seek the death penalty in its prosecution of Boston Marathon bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev. In a statement today, Attorney General Eric Holder said that, “The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision”.
Though not at all surprising, and as a lifelong resident of the Boston area who was living in city limits and working (though off that day) just blocks away from the events on April 15th, 2013, the news is disappointing. If we are not going to have an Attorney General who eschews the death penalty in Eric Holder, already a “liberal” boogeyman on the right for every sin under the sun, then it seems the day is a long way off, yet.
I had hoped, naively of course, that we as a country would attempt to show that we are better than the Islamic Fundamentalists who attack us. I had hoped we would make a statement that, even though they hate our way of life, our freedoms, our relatively liberal and permissive society, the fact that our women attend schools and wear shorts, even though they want to kill us, we would not stoop to their level. Even though we had a monster in our midst, who maimed and murdered our brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers on Patriots day last year, we would respond with mercy, showing the superiority of the liberal, western, democratic system they seek to topple.
Instead, it seems the United States will continue to cast its lot with countries like China, Iran, Sudan, and Somalia who still execute their criminals. In 2012, the United States executed 43 people, which was far less than China, but more than the entire continent of Africa, combined.
